We have a client that wants us to design a cable tray plan with a complete BOM. We have used Cooper Industries version of TrayCad in the past and have had some luck. This add-on, if you will, allows you to model specific tray and export a.csv file of a BOM. With that said, our client wants to use Enduro Tray.

Not an issue, I have spoken to our rep at Enduro and they asked us to send them the BOM of B-Line tray and they will convert it to their part numbers.The problem, or question I have is this. When you install the add on 'TrayCad' on your machine to run in AutoCAD, it takes away all snaps/grips, etc. I have already modeled a tray route that I want and the routing has been approved by the client.

If I open that model of the tray and try to use TrayCad parts and fittings, I can't snap the beginning of my cable tray run to the existing model as a go. This routing is so crucial that it can't be eyeballed at all, it has to be precise.Is there anyway to get snaps/grips to work again if you have TrayCad installed?

If not, is there another program that anyone knows of that we could use to achieve what I am looking for? I want to use a created model of tray that I designed as a go. Other than that, if no one knows of way to solve this I am assuming I have to do this the hard way, manually select the part numbers and give to the client.Any help on this matter will be much appreciated. If you can upload a drawing file with the cable tray components that you are referring to that don't have the grips as well as the route line you are wanting to place the tray on. I can then take a look at it. Hi,So, in looking at this drawing, it appears that you created all of the solids as the plugin doesn't seem to want to align them or do anything else for that matter since I didn't install a library.

Is this correct? I have played with the 3dOsnap settings and can't get them to work on this at all.So, I guess my suggestion would be to turn your solids into blocks and place a node at logical insertion points so you can get things to work properly. Either that or insert using the Mfr parts and redefine their blocks to meet your needs.Do either of these methods make any sense? I created the model that I sent to you on a machine that didn't have the TrayCad plug in.

These are all solids. I then try to open this model on the machine that has the plug in installed along with the library of all the mfr parts to try and insert theirs over the top of my model. Then at the end blow away my orignal model. Finished product would be a smart tray model that i can then select all the parts and pieces and the TrayCad plug in will generate a BOM for me.I am not sure I understand your options.

Hi JOsh,Ok, I think I understand what you are doing. If this is something you do frequently, I suggest you make a small library of the parts you frequently use to layout the path.

Each part would be a block and have a point on each on that you could use as a snap point.That way you can align all the parts very easily by using a node snap.This set of blocks could be accessed in a tool palette or Design Center when you are laying out your design.If you have a direct match between your blocks and those of the manufacturer you can use a block substitution (-Insert,blockname=blockname) to replace your blocks. TO take it even further you could perhaps right a simple script that does the substitution for you.Take a look at my sample drawing and let me know if this is worth the effort. I was able to look at your drawing last night. It look like you go through a pretty elaborate effort to generate all the solids and then have to go back and replace them with the Bline stuff.

As mentioned it would be beneficial if you had some snap points or NODES you could connect to. Once suggestion I will make is instead of modeling it all using solids only to come back and replace with other solids from Bline, have you considered just drawing a sketch line or 3DPOLY for each tray system, then you can come back and place the BLINE pieces on the Polyline. Utilize a consistent point system, In my Electrical Design Package I have utilize the centerline at bottom of tray. It allows the user to simply draw from plan view, then when they want the 3D Model they simply execute a Make3DTray command.Does the Bline software have a sketch system in it or is it simply a block insertion tool?Good luck. The reason why it is elaborate with the 3d blocks is because we have to make sure of an exact routing and that it will fit.

In a particular process area of a plant we are designing a new concrete, structure, piping, equipment locations, etc. Once our model is built we bring in a point cloud of the existing structures, etc.

The routing has to be exact and approved by the client before we give them the finished product of a cable tray plan, details and BOM. So what I have showed you in that dwg is basically a quick model of what I actually want but it's not worthy of producing a BOM.

TrayCad generates it's own BOM based on the blocks that you put it. It has a library based on what type of tray you want to use and it's exact as far as specs to each piece. Once it's created you can select every part/piece of tray and create a BOM which is very handy for a client to go by to order the tray.The problem that I mentioned in the beginning is that once TrayCad is installed, it blows away AutoCads ability to snap to anything, so basically you are eyeballing and that's not good enough for this project because we are literally threading a needle in many places. So even with a polyline, you can't snap TrayCad parts to it either. Snaps doesn't work. So I was wondering if there were any alternative ways to get what I need done.Thanks for everyone's help. Looks like I will have to manually do the BOM myself.
