WW2 Small Arms Identification GalleryLuger Identification Guide - Rework and non-DWM Lugers (1915-1945)This is one of a series of identification guides for small arms. The 1920 dated and double dated rework Lugers (DWM and Erfurt) are in the 'Lugers - DWM Commercial 1898-1929' Gallery. To the best of our knowledge, all the examples shown are original pre-1945 manufacture.
I'm liquidating a collection for a friend whose grandfather recently passed, and this is one of the items that I cannot get a good estimate for. There is so much conflicting info on the net it makes it difficult to assess it well. I want to make sure that neither the buyer, nor the seller get screwed (and I as the middle man don't get punched in the face either ) So here it is:1858 Remington New Army.44cal reproductionThe stamp under the loading lever reads 'Gregorelli & Uberti GARDONE VT - Italy'The serial number on the bottom of the butt is 2919Under the left grip is the number 83 stampedUnder the trigger guard is the number 83 stampedOn the loading lever is the number 83 stampedOn the right side of the frame there is a PN XVIII stamp, with a star in a squiggly circle on top of it.
The front of the cylinder has the PN.Here are some picturesIf anyone needs close ups are certain area shots I'm happy to provide them. (also, that isn't corrosion on the cylinder, it's grease) The basics I read seemed that Uberti and Gregorelli were only partners for a few years, like 1959-1962 or something. Some folks said the guns made during that time were 'hand made' and could be more valuable.
I have no idea if any of that is true. I will say, it does not have the GU script on it anywhere.
Let me know what else you guys would needGP. Looks to be a run-of-the-mill reproduction shooter, although the finish looks pretty nice.
There may be collectors on the frindges who collect modern foreign reproductions, but I've honestly never met anyone who does collect them. All that being said, it looks like an ordinary cap and ball reproduction, and as such I'd think maybe worth about $150 to $200 on a really good day.The holster is just a utility holster and wouldn't bring more than $20 to the table. (I used to carry a 7 1/2' SAA hunting/packing in a holster like that, and they are great for protection of the grips and keeping dirt and snow off the pistol!)I think I'd take the time and complement your friend for his grandfather taking really good care of that pistol. It most likely won't ever be a prized collector's item, but it is obvious that someone appreciated it.
